“Engine and Throttle Issues Can’t Keep Team McReynolds Down”
MOORESVILLE, NC (March 23, 2009) – Brandon McReynolds has learned a lot from his father and car owner Larry McReynolds. Larry instilled an attitude in Brandon that if things weren’t going the right way on any given weekend at the race track, the only thing to do is to fight and make the best of it. And while Brandon was looking for a win in the season opener for the UARA-Stars Late Model Series on Saturday night, he was happy to come out of the event with a car in one-piece and the knowledge that Team McReynolds fought all night long and kept their heads up en route to a 21st-place finish.
McReynolds took his #28 Airplus Insoles/Sculley Yachts Dodge to the famed Bristol Motor Speedway on the heels of an impressive open practice day at the track that saw McReynolds as one of the quickest cars in attendance. On Thursday afternoon, McReynolds backed that up with a solid top-10 position in the only practice session of the weekend. However, engine issues forced McReynolds to skip qualifying and take a provisional to start the race in 31st.
As the 100-lap event started on Saturday night following the NASCAR Nationwide Series event, the bad luck continued for McReynolds. In the opening laps, the throttle started sticking, forcing him to bring the car to pit road several times to try and fix the issue. After falling multiple laps down on pit road after all the stops, McReynolds finally made it back out to the track and started passing cars both low and high. When the 100-lap event was done, Brandon found himself 21st.
“We ended up salvaging a 21st-place finish out of the night, which was good for what happened,” said the 17-year old McReynolds. “I’m really happy with the car; we just had no luck at all. We were about two-tenths of a second quicker than the leader at the end of the race, so the car was fast. We just need some luck going into Tri-County in a couple of weeks. The team fought through the whole weekend and that gives me a lot of confidence going into this season.”
Brandon will now have a couple of weeks off before back-to-back-to-back race weekends at Tri-County Speedway (Hudson, NC), Rockingham (NC) Speedway and Concord (NC) Speedway. The team plans on testing at Tri-County before the upcoming race on Friday night, April 10. The opening event of the season for the UARA Series, scheduled for March 14th at Hickory Motor Speedway, was rained out and is still being rescheduled.
