Joey Logano knew what he was talking about when he said that sometimes it was better to be lucky than good. Logano’s car definitely wasn’t good, running a lap down at one time during the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 on Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway; however, pit strategy and a perfectly time intervention by Mother Nature gave Logano his first career win in the Sprint Cup Series.
As a matter of fact, Logano brought out a caution on lap 182 when he lost a tire and spun around. While he did get back on the lead lap later on, he never seemed to have the car to run with the guys who had been up front all day.
Ryan Newman and the No. 39 team tried going with the same strategy as Logano — staying out as long as possible in hopes that the rain would come — but the plan didn’t quite pan out for Newman when he ran out of fuel shortly before the rain arrived.
