Alli Owens Goes Back to School
Press Release“Daytona Native and Pro Motocross Rider Teach Kids Drug-Free Lifestyles”
Daytona Beach, Fla. (April 1, 2009) – ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Alli Owens went back to school today – not as a student but actually to do some teaching. She visited her alma mater, Atlantic High School, to share a special message with the students. Along with Pro Motocross rider Matt Scarboro, Owens discussed the importance of leading a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle.Owens drives the No. 19 ElectrifyingCareers.com Toyota for D’Hondt Motorsports in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. She sat on the outside pole for the Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway earlier this year and will be racing in at least nine additional events this season. Owens grew up in Daytona Beach, but recently moved to stock car racing’s hub, Mooresville, NC. Still, Owens never passes up the opportunity to return to her roots. “I loved growing up in Daytona Beach,” said Owens. “This city is near and dear to me and I never want to lose to touch with it. I’ve seen several race car drivers move to Mooresville and never go home to visit. A lot of drivers will only return home if the next race is in their hometown. Not me. I want to stay involved with this community and help it any way I can. It was great visiting my old high school today. I got to catch up with a bunch of my former teachers and chat with a lot of the students.”
At only 20 years old, Owens’ combination of youth and success make her a prime spokesperson to discuss the importance of making positive decisions. “It was definitely fun visiting Atlantic High School, but most importantly, I hope Matt and I showed everyone the importance of leading a positive lifestyle,” said Owens. “I know it’s easy for teenagers to get caught up in the wrong scene. I’ve seen too many kids ruin their future with drugs and alcohol. Matt and I are living our dreams. We wanted the students to realize that they can, too and it all starts with making the right decisions.”
Scarboro competes in Motocross, Supercross and Arenacross. He has earned five first-place finishes in the AMA – 250 A/Pro Sport Series. Scarboro hopes the extreme activities that he and Owens participate in sets an example of an exciting drug-and alcohol-free lifestyle. “Visiting Atlantic High School was a great experience,” said Scarboro. “Alli and I had the chance to talk with the students and share our message with them. I hope they realize that we’re involved in extreme sports and lead a crazy life, but it doesn’t involve drugs or alcohol. We have all the excitement that we can handle because we made smart choices when we were in high school. Hopefully the students will, too.”
