JACKSON, Mich. (Dec. 17, 2009) — Michigan International Speedway is making spirits bright this season.

Speedway staff and employees from Competition Tire delivered about 3,000 toys and $1,350 to The Salvation Army in Jackson on Thursday as part of the track’s Toys for Tots campaign.

The toys and money were collected during a track charity drive hosted by the speedway two weeks ago that allowed race fans to drive their personal automobiles around the two-mile oval in exchange for a donation of food, toys or money. About 400 fans showed up for the event.

“There’s definitely a need, especially in our area, for this kind of help,” speedway President Roger Curtis said. “It’s sad that we have to do this, but it shows there are always people who are willing to pitch in, help out and get involved, and race fans always seem to be the first people to answer that call.”

Toys and food will be distributed through The Salvation Army and local churches that will serve nearly 20,000 families who need help within Jackson County’s 700-square-mile area this holiday, said Mike Browne, the Jackson area coordinator for Toys for Tots.

“It’s special when local businesses pitch in and help out like this,” Browne said. “The people and businesses in Jackson County and surrounding areas are always very giving to their local communities, so thank you to MIS for being involved and always showing us you care.”

The speedway also delivered a box truck full of food to the CCIS Food Pantry in Brooklyn, Mich., last week. Speedway staff are scheduled to help Food Pantry volunteers assemble holiday basket for distribution to local families Friday.

“People need hope during the holidays,” Alisha Cottrell, director of Government and Community Relations for MIS, said. “If our efforts give those in a need a little lift while reminding other businesses about the importance of getting involved in the community, then we’ve succeeded a thousand times over.”

Brown said Toys for Tots will take donations through Christmas. He added there is a need for toys suitable for little girls. Donations can be made at The Salvation Army, 806 E. Pearl St., in Jackson.

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.
