Zach Campbell’s Road to Recovery a True Heroic Effort
Press ReleaseMooresville, NC (April 22, 2009) – September 22, 2001 changed young Zach Campbell’s life forever. A 14-year old kid at the time, Zach was attending a motocross racing school when a freak accident occurred that left him paralyzed and doctors proclaiming that he would never walk again. Determined to beat the odds, Zach underwent extensive therapy and within a year was walking with the assistance of leg braces and forearm crutches. His heroic effort to overcome his detrimental experience
will be honored this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.
Zach was a vibrant, athletic young teenager that had a passion for speed. So when the opportunity presented itself for him to attend an event promoted by Gary Bailey, he and his father jumped at the chance. After the school session had ended, Zach had some free time that enabled him to run around the course and have some fun. Just as he had landed a triple and was about to go up the face of the next jump the rider behind him overshot the triple and landed directly on top of Zach.
With no EMT on site and no helicopter able to airlift him, Zach was rushed 25 miles by ambulance to a hospital in Rome, Al. In the days following, the prognosis looked bleak. Zach was paralyzed and doctors said he may never walk again. Undeterred by the evaluation, Zach started his road to recovery at Alabama Physical Rehabilitation Services of Jacksonville, Al and was able to walk into school his freshman year with the aid of leg braces and forearm crutches.
As the therapy continued, Shriners stepped in to help with Zach’s lengthy rehabilitation program and thanks to them he has now progressed to partial use of leg braces. The Shriners worked with him past the 18th birthday cutoff as he was making “incredible” strides.
His need for speed continues as Zach recently bought himself a truck that is race ready with hand controls for his paraplegia. His goal is to race, race, race and work to help the Shriners to continue with other children. Quitting is not an option for Zach. Through his belief in God and very hard work he will continue to move forward and set the example for others. Limitations are only detours.
Zach will join CJM Racing this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway to take part in a behind the scenes look at the Aaron’s 312. The VIP experience will place him atop the pit box during the exciting fast paced action and will enable him to spend some time with Scott Lagasse Jr, driver of the No. 11 America’s Incredible Pizza Company Toyota Camry.
The Incredible Heroes campaign will run throughout the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series season. If you know of an Incredible Hero and would like to nominate him or her please email: heroes@incrediblepizza.com for consideration or check out www.incrediblepizza.com/contests/incredibleheroes.
