NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 12 of 35 – Dover (Del.) International Speedway
TAMING THE MONSTER MILE: In 13 previous starts at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, Kevin Harvick holds a record of three poles, two top-five and seven top-10 finishes and has led a total of 290 laps. As he makes his 14th start in the Nationwide Series at the Moster Mile, Harvick will aim to get his first win at the track and the first of the season for Copart in their first appearance on the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Chevrolet.
FIRST TIMER: Harvick arrived at Dover International Speedway for his first Nationwide Series appearance in 2000 and without previously being on the track, scored his first pole at the Monster Mile. Harvick went on to lead 97 laps and score a sixth-place finish. Prior to arriving at the track, the only “expereince” Harvick had on the famous track was via a computer racing game.
This weekend, KHI new comer J.R. Fitzpatrick will be looking to repeat what his new boss accomplished in 2000, only Fitzpatrick will be attempting to do this behind the wheel of the No. 4 KHI Chevy Silverado. Fitzpatrick has never been to Dover, except on racing simulators where he has logged laps practicing how to get around the famous Monster Mile.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM: KHI welcomes Copart, Inc. to the No. 33 Nationwide Series team starting this weekend at Dover as a new primary sponsor. Copart Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT), is an online vehicle remarketing company that sells more than 1 million cars per year. In addition to Dover, Copart will serve as the primary sponsor at Kentucky Speedway (June 13), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (June 27), Watkins Glen International (August 8), Dover International Speedway (September 26), Memphis Motorsports Park (October 24) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (November 21). Copart can also be seen on the No. 33 KHI Chevy Silverado driven by three-time Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday.
BEFORE THE RACE: QUOTES WITH DRIVER KEVIN HARVICK:
Describe Dover International Speedway. “Dover is an extremely fast track. You really need to concentrate the entire race just to make sure you don’t get caught up in someone else’s mistake. The track is very narrow with a lot of banking, which makes for some great side-by-side racing. This track is one of the toughest places on our circuit to pass. You also need to have a good qualifying run since pit road is very small and narrow which can cause you to lose a lot of valuable positions during a routine pit stop.”
Do you think Dover is more like Bristol or Richmond? “It is like a big Bristol. It is a place where you can lean on the banking a lot. You have to make your car turn and as the race goes on, the track changes a lot as it takes rubber. You have to keep up with the race track as the rubber builds.
“We ran good at Bristol this year in the Nationwide car and obviously got our first win (of 2009) there. We struggled a little at Richmond, but still finished in the top five. We’re taking the same car that we ran at both of those races and hopefully we can find the right mix and I can get my first Nationwide Series win at the Monster Mile.”
Is it hard to avoid accidents when they happen at Dover? “Things happen really fast. There really isn’t a lot you can do. But, you can usually tell when something is getting ready to happen in front of you. The real trouble spots are driving in too deep under someone getting in and washing up, getting a bad push or getting loose off the corners. The track is self cleaning with all the banking so it’s hard to get out of the way if you are in the groove and it all starts coming down the hill.”
CHASSIS HISTORY: This weekend the No. 33 Copart Chevrolet team will unload chassis No. 041 for Harvick at Dover International Speedway. This chassis was on track earlier this season at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway where Harvick started the race from the 13th position and scored his first career victory in a KHI-owned car and at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway where Harvick started eighth and finished fifth.
PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: KHI co-owner Harvick piloted the No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Chevrolet to a 23rd-place finish at Lowe’s (N.C.) Motor Speedway over Memorial Day weekend. Starting the race from the eighth position, Harvick struggled with the handling of the car for most of the night. Falling two laps down to the leaders, Harvick was able to move into the 23rd position before rain shortened the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300, 30 laps from the finish. The No. 33 KHI Chevrolet now sits third in the NASCAR Owner’s Point Standings entering this weekend’s event at Dover International Speedway.
