Press ReleasePost-Race Notes & Quotes
The Milwaukee Mile – June 20, 2009
- Kyle Busch (second) was the highest-finishing Toyota driver in Saturday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS)
race at The Milwaukee Mile. Busch led once for a race-high 80 laps, and it is the ninth top-five finish for Busch in 15
NNS races in 2009.
- Jason Leffler (10th) also scored a top-10 finish Saturday night for Toyota.
- Camry drivers Trevor Bayne (12th), Michael McDowell (14th), Scott Lagasse Jr. (16th), Burney Lamar (22nd), Brad
Coleman (24th), Michael Annett (28th) and Kelly Bires (36th) were also in the field.
KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Combos Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position: 2nd
Can you talk about your race tonight?
“We started in the back and drove through the field. We had a good race car. I knew that Carl (Edwards) was better
than us all night. He just took his time and stayed out on tires one run. He fell behind a little bit with track position. He
seemed to get that back. He went up there and passed us and won the race. Our car wasn’t that strong, it was real loose
if I tried to drive it any harder. I just didn’t have it.”
Are you disappointed with tonight’s finish?
“Well, duh. I finished second. I’m not here to finish second. I traveled all this way to win the race and I didn’t win the
race. I guess the bright side of it is that I’ll get home early and get to bed early.”
Do you think you needed clean air to get the win?
“I was out front and he passed me. His car was better than my car was. Any time I tried to go harder I got loose.”
Can you talk about your battle for second with Erik Darnell?
“It was a hard battle with Erik (Darnell). He had a good race car, too. It was another Roush (Fenway Racing) car. I just
tried to race him clean and try to get by him there and eventually I finally did. We probably had a second, third or
maybe fourth place car and made the most of what we had.”
Finishing Position:
10thDid your car handle differently in the race than practice?
“I’m not sure what happened. We just lost all of our speed. We had a good car in practice and thought we were going to
be able to battle with the leaders during the race. We were just fighting the thing all night. Scott (Zipadelli, crew chief)
and the guys worked hard on pit road to try to make it better, but it just never came to us. It was another top-10 finish for
this Great Clips team, but I’m disappointed because I thought we were going to challenge for the win.”
TREVOR BAYNE, No. 99 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
Finishing Position: 12th
Can you talk about your race tonight?
“We had to overcome some adversity tonight. We really had to work on the car and finally got it decent at the end of the
race. Unfortunately we had a tire get away from us and we had to overcome that, but that’s stuff that happens every once
in a while. Jerry (Baxter, crew chief) and I learned a lot tonight, and I continue to get more comfortable in these cars. For
this being only my third race with the team, I can’t be too disappointed with the result.”
What did the team do to try and make the car better?
“This was the first time with these guys that we’ve really had to work on the car. The Aaron’s Dream Machine is a
winning race car and these Michael Waltrip Racing guys are a championship-caliber team. Jerry (Baxter, crew chief) and I
continue to get better at communicating with each other, and that will only get better the more time I have in the seat.”
