+ TOP 10 AT THE GLENScott Speed’s to-race list is nearing completion. After finishing 10th in Saturday’s
Nationwide Series Zippo 200 – his debut at Watkins Glen International – Speed
can now say he’s at least raced at all 22 tracks on the Sprint Cup schedule.
The 26-year-old had never seen the high-speed, 2.45-mile Watkins Glen road
course before Friday. But Speed’s No. 99 Red Bull Toyota was immediately near
the top of the time sheets in practice and qualified fourth for the third race in a
row.
Michael Waltrip Racing went with a two-stop strategy, with the last coming under
caution 37 laps from the finish when Speed’s car took on four tires, fuel and a
series of adjustments. He restarted 16th and gradually reclaimed the track
position that was his in the first third of the race. He reached the top five with 22
laps to go, and only a last-lap misstep entering the inner loop chicane – turns
five, six, seven and eight – prevented Speed from earning his first top-five finish
in Nationwide competition.
Instead, it was his fourth top 10 in eight starts.
“These 99 Michael Waltrip Racing guys give me a great car every time I get
behind the wheel. Today was no different,” Speed said. “It was a great run for my
first time at Watkins Glen. It wasn’t the finish we were hoping for because we
thought we had a top-five car, but we came home with a solid top-10 finish.”
