+ SPEED BEEFS UP NATIONWIDE NUMBERSScott Speed’s top-10 tear through the Nationwide Series rolled on for another
weekend, as the 26-year-old Californian finished eighth in Saturday’s Dover 200
at Dover International Speedway.
It was Speed’s fifth consecutive top 10 in Michael Waltrip Racing’s No. 99 Red Bull
Toyota, and only twice has he finished outside the top 13 in 10 starts. He’s also
qualified in the top 10 five races in a row.
“These Nationwide races help me a lot,” he said. “There’s no question.”
After starting fifth, Speed had the fastest car on the track in the early going, and
the team opted to pit a few laps early because of a right-front vibration. Speed
missed pit entry the first time around, came in the next lap and cycled back into
the action in fourth.
He held top-five status until the handling fell off just a tick with 40 laps to go -
the only snag in an otherwise flawless day.
“We were really great for the first half of the race,” said Speed, who finished
seventh in May’s Nationwide race at Dover. “Unfortunately, in the last half of the
race, we weren’t quite as strong. But nonetheless, it was a great day for us. We
tried to gamble a little bit there coming into the pits. In hindsight, we probably
could’ve done things a little bit different. It was a top-10 finish, though, and we’ll
take it.”
Speed and MWR will team up for three more Nationwide races this season -
Saturday at Kansas, Oct. 10 at California and Nov. 21 at Homestead.
