SOUTH BOSTON, VA. — South Boston Speedway will serve up a triple dose of racing excitement Saturday night when it hosts the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified 150.

Three action-packed races will be featured in the first night race of the 2009 season at America’s Hometown Track. The first event of the night’s tripleheader will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Highlighting the racing action will be the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Drivers in the touring series will battle it out for 150 laps on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval. Also featured will be a pair of 75-lap races for the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen Late Model Stock Car Division.

Two-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Philip Morris of Ruckersville, Va. won the season-opening Late Model event at America’s Hometown Track and will enter Saturday night’s twin 75-lap races as the division’s points leader.

When the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modifieds hit the track, Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem, N.C. will be among the drivers seeking to claim a victory. The former USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Driver is now setting his sights on top rookie honors on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

Ward claimed his USAR Pro Cup Series honors in 2007, one season after he won the UARA Series championship.

The 28-year-old Ward says he is grateful to have Mike Norman of DMC Auto Exchange, a longtime series sponsor and supporter, onboard for the 2009 season. He added that Norman, like he, wants to run up front. In season-opening action two weeks ago, Ward motored to a six-place finish at Concord Speedway in North Carolina.

Ted Christopher, the preseason pick by members of the media to claim the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship, got his season off to a positive start during season-opening action at Concord Speedway two weeks ago.

Christopher passed Burt Myers on the opening circuit and led the entire way to win the Capital Bank 150.

The victory was the third career NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour win for Christopher, the defending champion of the series.

Practice will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:30 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:00 p.m.

The rain date for Saturday’s race will be Sunday, April 5.
