Watermelon Capital Next for Drew Brannon
Press ReleaseAfter several weeks away from the track, the ASA Late Models South Division is back in action this Saturday at the Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Georgia. South Division points leader Drew Brannon and the SS Green Light Racing team will be back in action at the Watermelon Bowl 100 hoping to further extend his lead in the standings.
Brannon and his Butch Miller lead team have started the season off with two wins and a second place finish giving him a solid lead in the ASA Late Models South division point standings. Coupled with his win during New Smyrna Speedweeks the racing media has taken notice of the young Florida driver. Speed51.com has Drew ranked as the third best prospect under 18 and the top seventeen year-old on David Smiths Motorsports Scouting Network. “It’s great to be noticed for our success, right now I am concentrating on this weekend and maintaining our lead in the points.
Having four weeks off since the series last event, Brannon’s strong desire for competition has him eager to return. “I just can’t stand sitting at home, it’s been driving me crazy. I just want to race, I wish we could race every weekend, this is the longest I have been out of a race car since the first of the year,” young Brannon said. “Our schedule picks up now and this is just what I’ve been waiting for.”
During the hiatus from behind the wheel, Brannon traveled with the SS Green Light Racing Truck team to Kansas Speedway to watch Chad McCumbee compete in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250. “I had the chance to go to Kansas to watch the NASCAR Camping World Trucks run with Chad a couple weeks ago. It was a great experience, but man was it hard to be at a racetrack, down in the pits with no driver’s suit or helmet. I just wanted to crawl into one of those trucks to see what the truck feels like at that fast speedway. It was a great experience to be there and watch from the pit box with Bobby (Dotter) and the team.”
Miller and crew have taken the extra time preparing Brannon’s mount for a grueling stretch of five races in six weeks. “We have a long stretch coming up and Drew has done a great job of taking car of the so far this year, but I’ve got to make sure we are prepared for anything that comes along. The SS Green Light guys are doing a good job of prepping for the next few weeks.”
Drew’s thoughts on Watermelon Capital Speedway: “I’ve only been there once, back in 2005 running in the Fastruck Series. We won that race so I’m really looking forward to going back with Butch and the SS Green Light team to see if we can keep a perfect record there. It’s a fast, four-tenths mile d-shaped track that’s fairly easy to pass, it’s a track we should be able to run up front.”
The SS Green Light #08 team is supported by ASI Limited, Spectrum Metal Finishing & Akzo Nobel and will compete in both the ASA Late Models South Division and the ASA Challenge Division for the 2009 racing season. After three events, Brannon leads Brandon Johnson by 71 points in the ASA Late Model South Division standings.
The ASA Watermelon Bowl 100 take place on Saturday May 9th with practice beginning at noon, qualifying at 4:30pm and the green flag will fall on 100-lap feature at 9:30pm eastern time. There will be an open practice on Friday May 8th.
