Hershel McGriff: At 81, the retired driver will attempt to qualify for a NASCAR Camping World West Series race today at Portland International Raceway. And if he does, he will become the oldest driver ever to compete in a national NASCAR series race.

McGriff knows PIR. The native of Bridal Veil, Ore., won on the road course in 1986 the last time the series — then known as Winston West — visited the track. He’s raced in 85 NASCAR Cup series events, winning four. But not many racers can say they’ve retired 48 years apart — in 1954 and again in 2002.
