Mechanical Failure Ends Weekend Prematurely For Cory Joyce
Press ReleaseJoyce pulled out to qualify on Saturday afternoon and was surprised when the car felt completely different from earlier practice. After fighting the handling around the track for two laps, Joyce mustered up a time that placed him 31st out of 43 cars. The Cory Joyce Racing crew thrashed to cure the issues before Sunday’s event and thought they discovered and remedied the issue.
From the start of the race on Sunday however, it was apparent there was a bigger mechanical problem hindering the No. 33. Barely able to hang on coming out of each turn, Cory tried to keep his car underneath him for the first portion of the race, feathering the throttle to keep off the outside retaining wall. Finally at lap 40, Cory couldn’t hang on any longer and spun around in turn two, barely kissing the white concrete. The team came down pit road and crew chief Dan Bormann discovered a broken rear end that would ultimately end their day.
“I’m frustrated because we had a rocket in practice and the car was really hooked up all day Friday and Saturday before qualifying. Obviously mechanical failures happen but it’s disappointing because we were having so much fun and could have done so well.”
Through the disappointment, the Riderswholesale.com 100 was a good learning experience for Joyce. “I can’t thank my crew chief Dan and our crew enough for putting together a great car for me, and the Comfort Suites in Myrtle Beach and the Humane Society of Charlotte for their support. I liked the track and now I know if we go back I know I can be fast.”
Cory’s racing season is complete for 2009, but he will have a full schedule keeping him busy for the next few weeks. He will be attending the Hickory Motor Speedway awards banquet on December 5th, as well as making an appearance in the charity event Stocks for Tots on December 8th.
