RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE AUTO CLUB 500 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES RACE AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2009, PAGE 1. “Well actually what didn’t happen. I mean, we lost the brakes on like lap eight [smiles] so the whole race was such a huge struggle just from the standpoint of we couldn’t get in the corners. We had a really great car we just couldn’t race anyone. When we were by ourselves we weren’t bad but just couldn’t stop the thing in the corners at all. And then eventually we lost, I believe, two cylinders. Not sure what the cause was.” “Eventually, yeah. I mean, the brakes put us out on lap 10 but we were still struggling around in the back at least the whole time then obviously at the end there the engine went. We guessed very aggressively on the brakes and missed so. It was a long day.”
JOEY LOGANO IN THE No. 20 HOME DEPOT TOYOTA WAS THE RAYBESTOS ROOKIE OF THE RACE IN TONIGHT’S RACE AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY.
NOTES:
Logano scored a 26th-place finish and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the first time in 2009.
UNOFFICIALLY Logano and Scott Speed are tied for the lead in the Raybestos Rookie standings (11-11).
LOGANO: “I wish I learned half this stuff before we started racing [smiles].. I think everyone did a great job. I’m happy with this. I think we definitely needed this for sure, just kind of get the season rolling, get everything going. We’re going to take it and improve from it and I feel a lot better. I know we can do this and coming back here next time I feel a little bit better, too.” “I don’t think the track changes much as I thought it was going to. We made some adjustments and jumped the fence each way both a couple of times but overall it was okay.” WAS IT DIFFICULT PREPARING FOR THE RACE BECAUSE YOU PRACTICED IN THE AFTERNOON AND RACED AT NIGHT?
“You’re a Raybestos Rookie [smiles]. You don’t know what’s going to happen at night. It’s something that you’ve got to figure out for yourself once you’re out there. Zippy knows at least [laughs].” HOW IMPORTANT WAS IT TO FINISH AND GET SOME POINTS AND TRY TO CATCH-UP FROM DAYTONA?
“It’s key, for sure. We needed a good, solid finish and at least keep us in the top-36 in points when those races come along. This is what we need to do the next few races and just get some nice, consistent finishes.” WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST THING THAT YOU LEARNED TONIGHT?
“I learned a lot. Just you know working around the racetrack, different lines, different grooves make your car do different things. Working the bottom, working the top, coming in the pits, it’s things like that that you go by racetrack to racetrack to keep learning and it takes time.”
