Gilliland Qualifies Capital Window Chevy in 30th for Shelby 427
Press ReleaseLas Vegas, Nevada (February 27, 2009) – David Gilliland qualified the No. 71 Capital Window/TRG Motorsports/Chevrolet Impala SS in 30th place for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Gilliland, classified as a go-or-go-homer in qualifying, with the team not having owner points from last season, has once again qualified and will start from the 15th row.
“I am excited,” Gilliland said. “TRG Motorsports prepared a great car for this week. We are in the race. We will be here on Sunday which is the first goal. We are in and I am real excited to have Capital Window on the car for this week. Hopefully we can do a good job for those guys.”
The team had a strong car in practice, running as high as 24th.
“It was good in practice. We ended up close to where we were in practice in relation to the whole field. I was just a little tight in qualifying and in practice. Historically this place has gotten freer in qualifying. We were a little hesitant to free it up, but we needed the adjustment to go faster. I feel real good about the car for the race. Tomorrow we can work on it in race trim and get the car driving good for the race.”
Gilliland needs a good handling car for the race on Sunday.
“The car has to turn. This is a really fast track and you have to be able to carry that momentum. You can’t be tight. The characteristic of this car is that we have to start off pretty free to be able to not get too tight in the middle of a run.”
TRG Motorsports’ team principal Kevin Buckler likes the progress that this new team is showing.
“We are getting faster and better as a team with every lap,” Buckler said. “David is doing a great job to keep the car in good shape and providing the feedback to the crew to go faster every time out. We have a small, tight group of guys that are making this team work. We have the good fortune of bringing Capital Window on the car starting here this weekend. They share our operational beliefs and goals and we look forward to representing them in NASCAR.”
The Shelby 427 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be televised on FOX starting at 3:30 p.m. PT on Sunday, March 1.
