Speedway Motorsports and Prilosec OTC® Launch Innovative BBQ Shootout Series
Press ReleaseInaugural Event This Week at Texas Motor Speedway
CONCORD, N.C. (March 31, 2009) – In yet another Fans First initiative, officials with Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE:TRK) announced an innovative program with Prilosec OTC® to bring the world’s best barbecue to race fans during four NASCAR Sprint Cup events.
The Prilosec OTC® BBQ Shootout Series will launch in conjunction with the Samsung 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race this week at Texas Motor Speedway.
“This is an innovative new competition that will include award-winning pit masters and barbecue teams from around the country,” said Marcus Smith, president and chief operating officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. “They’ll compete for the prestige and prize money of an event championship, but the real winners will be the fans at our race tracks that get to taste the lip-smacking barbecue on race days.”
The Prilosec OTC® BBQ Shootout Series will take place at Texas Motor Speedway (April 3-5), Lowe’s Motor Speedway (May 22-24), Bristol Motor Speedway (Aug. 20-22) and Atlanta Motor Speedway (Sept. 4-6).
Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the invitation-only competition will feature more than a dozen professional teams, honorary judges, cooking demonstrations and total posted awards of $15,000, with $2,500 going to the Grand Champion. Competitors will sell varieties of barbecued chicken, pork and beef sandwiches, ribs, brisket and sauces with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Speedway Children’s Charities and the NASCAR Foundation.
SPEED Channel will film each competition for national television broadcast at a later date.
“Prilosec OTC® is thrilled to be at the Speedway Motorsports facilities to make sure thousands of fans can enjoy this terrific competition,” said Robert Cleveland, Prilosec OTC Brand Manager®. “NASCAR is about more than the cars on the track. It’s about the excitement and passion the fans feel for the drivers, speedways and events. The Prilosec OTC BBQ Shootout Series will take that excitement to another level.”
The inaugural competition at Texas Motor Speedway will feature 13 teams from eight different states, including a local favorite, the Denton-based Texas Rib Rangers.
Judging for the Prilosec OTC BBQ Shootout Series will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Prilosec OTC® display located between Gates 3 and 4 on the TMS frontstretch. Awards and check presentations will follow on Sunday at 11 a.m. preceding the Samsung 500.
