Gilliland Qualifies TRG Motorsports Chevy in 30th at Texas

The fast mile-and-a-half Texas Motor Speedway, one of Gilliland’s favorite tracks, proved so today in qualifying when the native Californian put down a lap time of 28.769 and a speed of 188 mph good for a 15th row starting position. The team currently sits 36th in owner points, just three points out of 35th. The team is running Old Faithful the same car that they ran at California, Las Vegas and Atlanta.
“You would think that I would get used to this feeling of having to qualify our way in, but I just can’t,” Gilliland said. “It is just something that is indescribable. I am really proud of all of the TRG Motorsports guys. They have worked hard the past couple of weeks and we deserve to be racing on Sunday.”
Gilliland had a better car than in qualifying.
“The car was definitely better in qualifying than in practice. Slugger and the guys just keep making it faster every time we go out on the track. We don’t have teammates to go lean on for information. We are doing it the tough way, good old fashion hard racing. This team is doing the job. Making the races keeps us on the track, on TV and in the headlines to get that attention from potential sponsors, which is what we need right now.”
Gilliland knows what he needs to have a good race car on this fast Texas oval.
“You have to have a car that turns good coming off of the corners. It tends to get tight exiting the turns and that really affects your speed down the straights. You got to turn. We have gotten better and better each practice and will work on it some more in the last practice tomorrow.”
TRG Motorsports team principal, Kevin Buckler, is proud of his small team and the way they perform in qualifying.
“This group of guys has risen to the challenge every weekend in qualifying,” Buckler said. “David and Slugger and the entire crew are on the same page in practice and just keep making the car faster every time out. Some good cars went home with big sponsors on the hood today. We really need some help on our hood to keep this awesom team going forward for the rest of the season.”
Gilliland is scheduled to SPEED Channel’s Track Side Live tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway will be run Sunday, April 5 and televised live on FOX starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.
