RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE CONTENDER QUOTES FOR THE SUNOCO RED CROSS PENNSYLVANIA 500 NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES RACE AT POCONO RACEWAY, AUGUST 3, 2009.
SCOTT SPEED IN THE No. 82 RED BULL TOYOTA WAS THE TOP RAYBESTOS ROOKIE IN TODAY’S RACE AT POCONO.
NOTES:
Speed posted a 23rd-place finish and took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the FOURTH time this season.
Both Raybestos Rookies entered in today’s race finished on lead lap.
SPEED: “We got a little bit off target with the setup there in the middle but we were able to keep good reasonable track position and we set ourselves up for a good reasonable finish. At the end everyone was getting a little bit crazy out there and for us we needed to finish races so I took a relatively easy time out there. Once you start running up there in the top-17 with guys like Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch you certainly learn a lot more and they’re able to teach you a lot more, if you know what I mean [smiles]. They’re able to certainly race you a lot better than the guys that I’m normally racing with in the back. It was a good learning experience for us as we don’t normally get to run so competitive to race with those guys.”
HOW WAS THIS RACE FOR YOU IN THE SENSE THAT YOU’VE RACED HERE ONCE BEFORE THIS SEASON AND HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE IN RACE CONDITIONS? “Well if you look at last time here we were horrible, a couple of laps down, or at least a lap down, and this time I didn’t think we had a great day by any means and we ended up 23rd. It was a real solid day for us and we could do that all year.”
ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK AT WATKINS GLEN? “Absolutely. I get to race two cars [smiles].”
CAN YOU COMPARE YOUR ROAD COURSE IN OPEN WHEEL TO HERE IN A STOCK CAR? “It’s totally different, totally different.”
DOES THAT PAST EXPERIENCE AT LEAST HELP YOU? “Absolutely, like when I’m out there running with guys I’m like ‘Are you guys kidding?’ Like a couple of guys like, wow, what are you doing. They probably looked like me when I first started racing on an oval. But for the most part I’d say 75 percent of the guys can race a road course here. At this level guys are good and they can certainly race these big heavy cars around there. I don’t feel like I have a huge advantage with my background but I certainly am on the sharper end of that stick.”
JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 THE HOME DEPOT TOYOTA: WHAT HAPPENED LATE IN THE RACE IN TURN 1? “The 6 car got into the back of the 96 and dumped him and I was on the outside of the whole mess and nowhere to go. Tore up a race car and we were fast. We battled track position all day. Get up front, go to the back. Go up front, go to the back. We could never get anywhere. We had a fast race car. We passed so many race cars and didn’t get anywhere.”
YOU WERE RUNNING 13TH WHEN YOU HAD TO PIT MOMENTS BEFORE A RESTART WITH JUST 30 LAPS TO GO. “The left rear went flat and that put us back there. And then we got lucky, got a caution. I got four tires and was working my way back to the front. I was way faster than the cars in the back there and I was thinking, you know, maybe get up in the top-15 or so and got caught up in a wreck but that’s what happens when you run in the back: you get wrecked. Happens every time.”
THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED IN TURN 1WHICH SEEMS TO BE A FAST AND NARROW CORNER HERE. “That’s the widest corner of all of ‘em b ut when you’re on the outside of cars and you spin out and they all go toward the top you’re a sitting duck. That’s about it.”
