TRG Motorsports’ Lally Ready for Sprint Cup
Press Release
Lally, who will be driving the No. 71 TRG Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS, has a lot of history at what he bills as his favorite track. The Northport, New York native has won six professional races at The Glen. The last win was in June in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Sports Car Series which he won behind the wheel of a TRG Porsche.
“I have a lot of laps around the Glen,” Lally said. “I have been able to run additional laps in the Sprint Cup car at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) and at New Jersey Motorsports Park since the test before Infineon. The team has been great. Kevin Buckler and all of the TRG Motorsports partners have really put their faith in me here and I really want to thank them. This is an awesome opportunity for me.”
Lally will also be running in his usual ride in the Grand-Am Rolex Series on Friday evening.
“The good thing about the schedule this weekend is that there is not too much over lap. I have a full day in the Rolex Series car on Thursday. The most important part of the process is to get the car into the show and race on Sunday. After qualifying I will hop straight into the Porsche for the Rolex race and get to it. There won’t be any problem going back to the Rolex car on Friday. It is also good that we have another practice in the Sprint Cup car on Saturday morning to get me re-acclimated and tuned-in for the race on Sunday.”
Lally has a lot of history at his favorite track and a few tricks up his Nomex sleeve.
“I think the line will be very similar from the Porsche to the Chevy. I will also apply some of my own secrets that I have learned there over the years that will also be helpful in the Sprint Cup car. I am also going to take what I learned from the Nationwide race that I ran in 2007 to see what works. I can’t wait to get on track with the No. 71 and see what we have against some of the best drivers in the world.”
Kevin Buckler, TRG Motorsports team principal, has a lot of confidence in his sports car ace Lally.
“We are ready to go with Andy and our first ever multi-car effort in Sprint Cup,” Buckler said. “This is really a big weekend for all of us. We have had Andy in the car three times in preparation for this weekend. Add that to our long winning history at Watkins Glen together and we are hoping for a very good weekend. Andy and David have worked well together during testing and we hope that will carry over to the race this weekend and they can lean on each other for the best possible team performance. This is big for all of us at TRG Motorsports.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from Watkins Glen International Raceway will be televised live on ESPN starting at 1:00 p.m. ET, Sunday, August 9.
TRG Motorsports is based in Mooresville, North Carolina. Currently the team fields a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entry as well as a Camping World Truck Series effort and an ARCA RE/MAX Series team. The Racer’s Group was founded in 1993 and has been competing at the top level of sports car racing. TRG’s Porsche sports car program is run out of the company’s headquarters in Petaluma, California. The team has the most wins of any team in the Grand-Am Rolex Series with 28, including the 2005 and 2006 Rolex Series GT championship trophy to go along with wins in the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona (three) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
