Shane Sieg Battles Back for Top-20 in Kansas Chaos
Press ReleaseSieg in his third start at the 1.5-mile paved track in Kansas City, Kansas track posted a qualifying time of 33.079 seconds at a speed of 163.246 miles per hour.
Under ominous skies the Camping World Truck Series took the green flag with Sieg advancing to the 19th-place position by the time the first caution flag dropped on lap four. Sieg again advanced after the restart moving to the 15th-place position on lap 21.
When caution returned to the track on lap 39 Sieg was in the 11th-place position. Crew chief Richie Wauters brought the No. 15 Samsung Instinct Tundra down pit road for four tires returning on the next lap for fuel and track bar adjustments. A slow stop dropped Sieg back to the 21st-place position for the restart on lap 42.
Just 10 laps after the restart heavy rain and tornado warnings in the area halted the event sending the teams and drivers into secure locations until the storm past. The race was delayed until Monday morning at 10:00am CT but rain continued to dampen the Kansas track delaying the finish until 2:00pm CT.
Just before the scheduled 167-lap event resumed Monday afternoon, Sieg sitting in the 20th-place position came down pit road for some last minute adjustments. While approaching pit lane Sieg discovered the Tundra was stuck in second gear. The pit crew quickly responded, jacking up the truck on pit road to manually adjust the truck so Sieg could again shift the No. 15 Samsung Instinct Tundra. The stop proved costly for Sieg loosing multiple laps and track position.
Despite the adversity Sieg continued to run laps comparable to the top-five drivers in his No. 15 Samsung Instinct Tundra. Sieg received the “Lucky Dog” award three times, moving him to a 19th-place finish when rain ended the race early on lap 132.
“It has been a pretty stormy weekend,” Sieg said. “We thought if we freed the truck up right before the start we’d be in good shape to finish the race but it got stuck in second gear. The guys on this pit crew worked hard to get us back out there but we just ran out of laps before the rain came again. I have to thank Samsung Instinct for coming onboard with the team this weekend; I just wish I would have brought home a better finish for them.”
The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to racing action Friday, May 15, 2009 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC.
