No Ohio 250; no more new memories
Caught in the Catchfence™If there was ever a race to end on, Mansfield Motorsports Park could do no worse than last year’s Ohio 250 for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Anyone who was there won’t forget it, that’s for sure.
Rookie Donny Lia only led one lap all day, but it was the most important one. When the white flag flew, Lia got on the back bumper of David Starr, tapping him in turn 2 and moving below him. That briefly opened the door for veteran Todd Bodine, and the three finished the last quarter mile three-wide with Lia edging between them both as the checkers flew.
It was considered one of the best finishes in NASCAR in 2008, and it ranks at the top of my all-time list in terms of dramatic endings.
Sadly, Lia won’t be back to defend his win this weekend, nor will anyone else in the series be in town.
Scheduled to again be a Memorial Day weekend event, lack of sponsorship and an unsure economy doomed the 2009 version of the race for track owner Mike Dzurilla and the rest of us.
