Fresh Off his First Win, Joey Coulter Ready For Challenges of Road Course Racing
Press Release
“Last year (2009), road course racing was hands down my least favorite type of racing,” said Coulter. “I knew going into this season that the competition level would be extremely high, and I wanted to make sure I understood and felt comfortable with left and right turns. To help me get accustomed to the road courses, I visited Bondurant (High Performance Driving School) in January and it paid off immensely at Palm Beach (International Raceway), and I know it will translate here at New Jersey (NJMP).”
Fresh off a busy week following his Berlin Win, Coulter is ready to ride the momentum into NJMP, in his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet. Coulter spent Sunday (8/8/10) as a special guest of the Lake Erie Crushers, where he was invited to throw out the opening pitch and showcase his Sunoco victory lane flag to the fans. Tuesday (8/10/10), ARCA’s two most recent winners, Joey Coulter (Berlin – 8/7/10) and Robb Brent (Pocono – 7/31/10) spent the day at Cedar Point amusement park, visiting with fans and signing autographs.
Making only his third road course appearance this weekend (8/15/10) in the ARCA 150 presented by the American Red Cross, Coulter wanted to make sure he freshened up on his road course techniques. His Coulter Motorsports crew, took the Miami Springs, FL native to VIR for a test and tune late last month. Veteran crew chief Harold Holly also brought in road course specialist Chris Cook to provide Coulter with additional spotting and coaching. Cooks advice and Coulter’s determination to learn paid off, as Coulter would lay down consistently fast times throughout the day.
“Joey (Coulter) is an extremely talented, young race car driver who showed his willingness to learn and to become the best at what he does,” commented Cook. “He adapted quickly to the track and gave great feedback all day, and I look for him to be a real threat come race day at NJMP.”
“I am very excited to go to NJMP this weekend and get back to road course racing,” said Coulter. “Our test at VIR really helped me gain another outlook on racing this way and showed the importance it plays in our sport (ARCA). Harold (Holly) and my guys have provided me with another great handling, fast car and I want to thank Chris (Cook) for spending the day with us and really helping me get everything dialed in.”
Make sure to tune into all of the weekends activities to catch Joey and his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet tackling the New Jersey Motorsports Park. Two one-hour practices are scheduled on Saturday in preparation for the Garden State 150 presented by American Red Cross. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell will take place at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Live audio coverage and live timing and scoring of all Saturday events will be available on ARCARacing.com.
