Young Ty Dillon drives in family tradition
Caught in the Catchfence™Ty Dillon, the youngest grandson of Sprint Cup team owner Richard Childress, is making a name for himself.
Dillon, an 18-year-old from Lewisville and a senior at Forsyth Country Day School, registered his first career victory in an ARCA Racing Series event Sept. 30 at Kansas Speedway.
He’ll go for two in a row Saturday in the 200-lap ARCA finale at Rockingham Speedway. The race will start at 1:30 p.m. and be televised on SPEED (Time Warner Ch. 512).
Dillon, who has a flexible schedule at FCD to accommodate his racing, completed a whirlwind flight-out-and-back trip last week and came home from Kansas with the biggest win of his young career.
“It was my first time on a mile-and-a-half race track and our second ARCA race,” said Dillon, who finished second in his ARCA debut in Iowa in July and also won a race in NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series East in August. “It was really cool (to win at Kansas), my grandfather was there, and my dad was there.”
Grandfather Richard Childress said: “It was great to watch him win and watch the look on his face, and to see how he drove that car.”
Dillon’s car number is 41, the same number Richard Childress used while racing at Bowman Gray Stadium years ago.
