When NASCAR dropped Mexico from its Nationwide Series schedule in 2008, it opened up a race date for Iowa Speedway.

But could the recent announcement that Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill., won’t seek sanctioning for its two Nationwide races and one Camping World Truck Series event translate to more opportunities for the Newton track?

NASCAR president Mike Helton can’t say.

“The 2011 schedules are being put together as we speak and they’ll get announced and the outcome of all of that will get announced with the schedules,” said Helton, who indicated NASCAR’s schedules for next season could be released in mid- to late August.

Team owner Richard Childress said if Gateway’s Nationwide dates are replaced, Iowa Speedway would be a prime spot and could land a second race date.

“A facility that’s out there like Iowa here can handle a standalone (race),” said Childress, whose Sprint Cup team has three top-12 drivers. “It takes a special facility – and they put on a great race here.”
