Chase Elliott Finishes With A Top-Five At South Boston
Press ReleaseDAWSONVILLE, Ga. (June 14, 2010) - Chase Elliott and the crew of his Aaron’s
Dream Machine set out for their second outing in a USAR event this season,
at South Boston Speedway in Virginia, armed with a little more knowledge of
what it would take to be competitive in the USAR, which is a step up from
the Late Models Elliott usually runs. He and his Aaron’s team put that
knowledge to work, came away with a top-five finish and showed that they
soon will be a contender for victory.
After a short rain delay, 22 drivers made their qualifying runs, and Elliott
set a time of 16.145 on his second lap which would be good for the fourth
position.
At the beginning of the race, Elliott fell back to the fifth position and
continued to fall back before settling into the 10th position. Elliott
reported to the crew that the car was tight in the center of the turns. The
caution flag was displayed for the first time on Lap 27, but crew chief
Ricky Turner and car chief Jim Barfield decided it was best to stay on the
track and get a better read on the car, so they would have a better idea of
what adjustments to make on their pit stop.
The caution was displayed for the second time on Lap 90, and the Aaron’s Pit
Crew serviced the Ford Fusion with fuel and a track bar adjustment. The
Aaron’s Pit Crew had obviously done their homework as well, as they made up
two positions on the stop.
Elliott restarted in the seventh position and was happy with the
adjustments. He passed the No. 75 car of Caleb Holman on Lap 115, then the
No. 73 of pole-sitter Jeff Agnew. Caution again came out on Lap 126.
Elliott entered pit road for four tires, leaving the track in sixth position
and reentering seventh, as not every car pitted.
The Aaron’s Dream Machine pit crew still outperformed other crews who put on just two tires.
Elliott now was hooked up and had fresh rubber. He worked his way around
lapped drivers and those ahead of him in the running order to take fifth
place and settled in there for the next 20 laps until the No. 31 car of
Logan Ruffin got into the back of Elliott, spinning them both coming out of
Turn Four.
Elliott looped it one time, stepped on the gas, straightened it out and
maintained his position coming to the caution flag.
At the next restart, Elliott maintained the fifth position and inherited the
fourth position when the No. 66 car of Benny Gordon called it a night with
mechanical problems. Elliott worked his way up to the third position, which
would be his highest position of the night, by Lap 180 but was later passed
back by the No. 07 of Matt Lofton and Ruffin and finished in the fifth
position.
Crew chief Ricky Turner was pleased with the performance of his driver and
crew in their second outing in the USAR.
“Good job, Chase,” he told his driver. “You stayed on the lead lap all day
and got us a top five. We’re a lot closer than what we were.”
Elliott replied: “Thank you guys. That was really a lot of fun.”
Then, like any racer worth his salt, he followed that by saying: “We still
lack a little though.”
Elliott is heading for practice today and racing on Tuesday in the CRA Super
Late Model series “Rowdy’s Revenge 251″ at Berlin Raceway.
