No. 84 driver Cole Whitt earned the second runner-up finish of his rookie
stock car season Saturday at Connecticut’s Lime Rock Park, and it came in his
first road-course race.
“I just tried so hard. It’s road racing,” said Red Bull Racing Team’s 19-year-
old development driver. “This is my first time ever on a road course. We
didn’t do any schools and we didn’t get to do any testing. I’m happy with how
we ran, definitely, even though I don’t show it. I’m kind of bummed out that
we were so good and just came up short of a win.”
Whitt, from Alpine, Calif., led twice in the 66-lap NASCAR K&N Pro Series East
event, including laps 45-51 before drifting off course one lap later after
contact with eventual winner Andrew Ranger. The Canadian road racer
gradually pulled away, beating Whitt’s No. 84 Red Bull Toyota to the
checkered flag by 5.899 seconds.
Despite the disappointment, the finish was Whitt’s third top five and fourth
top 10 in the season’s six races. He improved to fifth in the championship
standings – 136 points behind leader Ryan Truex with four races remaining.
Saturday’s race will air on SPEED at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday.
