“Trial Run for Annual Race for the Shriners”

Andrew Smith
Pooler, GA. (August 13, 2010): Andrew Smith left the asphalt tracks he is used to for a night of red clay racing at the Oglethorpe Speedway Park.

The race, his first of the year in his Chevy Monte Carlo dirt late model, was a test and tune session for the upcoming Race for the Shriners on August 31.

Starting from deep in the pack, Andrew methodically worked his way in traffic and learned where on the track the car would run the best and where he could pass on the very fast 5/8-mile track.

The late model class at Oglethorpe combines both “open” and crate motor cars. While he was no match for the more powerful open motor cars, Andrew managed to work his way up to a fifth-place finish – the highest finish for the crate motor cars.

“I had a blast” said an excited Andrew. “I guess it wasn’t a bad run for not being in the car at all this year. Jeff and Corey (Fletcher) got the car loosened up for me and I was able to turn under a couple of cars and pass. We just need more motor!”

Andrew’s next race at Oglethorpe Speedway will be on Tuesday, August 31 for the Race for the Shriners. Besides competing in the late model division, Andrew is scheduled to race in a celebrity race featuring NASCAR Sprint Cup driver David Ragan (UPS Ford) and other local celebrities.
