Augie Grill Dominates at Five Flags Speedway To Win the Miller Lite 100

PENSACOLA, FL (August 16, 2010) – Augie Grill was out to make a statement on Friday night that his #112 racecar is almost unbeatable in the Blizzard Super Late Model Series at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. This time, Grill won the Miller Lite 100. He took the lead with just over 80 laps to go and drove away for the victory, his second Blizzard win of the season and sixth of his career.
“The car was exactly like it was the last race here,” said Grill. “We knew we could expect the same results if we stayed out of trouble. We didn’t make any changes since the last race [because] we really didn’t think that we could make the car any better. It’s satisfying to know we have six wins now. I look back on my career and I could have easily won five more when I was younger.”
Grill has led over 200 laps of the 400 laps that have been run this season in the Blizzard Series. With his dominating performances over the course of the season, it has made several teams do their homework in search of speed.
“That’s four in-a-row in that car (including two at Five Flags),” said Grill. “I hope we can keep things up because the rest of the field is working on their cars and getting closer. Josh (Hamner) was good tonight. That’s been the best he’s been by far down here this season. I think we all knew it was a matter of time before he and the Kyle Busch team got things figured out.”
Hamner led nearly 20 laps before Grill got around him for the top spot. Even though they didn’t win the race, a strong podium finish was just what the doctor ordered for the former Blizzard Series Champion.
“We haven’t been this stellar down here all year,” said Hamner. “We have been working on the feel that I need for the racecar and you’re not going to come up here and luck into beating Augie. When you are that strong you’re bulletproof and we have been that way in the past and we’re looking to get back to that.”
Donnie Wilson, TJ Reaid and Jeff Fultz rounded out the top five. Mike Garvey, Allen Karnes, Chase Elliott, Tyler Millwood and Chuck Barnes Jr. made up the rest of the top 10.
Earlier in the evening, Grill won the pole. He also gained ground in the standings when both Johanna Long and Bubba Pollard had mechanical problems. Grill maximized his point total and closed to within 29 points of Chase Elliott for the lead in the Blizzard Series title. Incidentally, the Blizzard Championship is about the only thing he has never won at Five Flags.
“Chase will be better during the next race, I think they know they messed up,” added Grill. “I know the points are close, but I can’t expect them to falter. I know that car will come back in better handling condition and they will be tough.”
The Blizzard Series will be back in action on Friday, September 24th for the 100-lap Super Late Model finale for the 2010 season.
