LOS ANGELES, CA (April 13, 2010) – IndyCar driver Milka Duno, who will compete in the Long Beach Grand Prix this Sunday, will speak to students at Hollenbeck Middle School in East Los Angeles and at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona on Wednesday, April 14, 2010.

Duno, through her “Milka Way” program, strives to inspire students of all ages to “Aim for the Stars” and achieve academic excellence and has taken this message across the USA and around the world to help motivate students and help them understand the importance and value of education. In addition to events in the USA, Duno has spoken with children and students in Malaysia, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

A qualified Naval Engineer, Duno has four master’s degrees – in Organizational Development, Naval Architecture, Aquaculture and Maritime Business – earning the last three degrees simultaneously.

“I am very passionate about education and I want to do everything that I can to inspire students to study hard and aim for the stars!”.

“We are excited that Milka is taking time before the start of her racing activities Long Beach to urge students to use mathematics and science as the path to college,” CSU Senior Director of External Affairs, Jorge Haynes said. “Her book is a compelling story of how a young woman can achieve the highest levels of success in school and sports.”

The California State University is partnering with several corporations and community organizations in programs that inform parents and children about how to prepare for college. Through these programs parents and students learn that mathematics and science are the keys to college preparation.

“Milka Duno is a great example and spokesperson for academic success,” said Cal Poly Pomona President, J. Michael Ortiz. “We welcome her to our campus.”

At Cal Poly, Duno will chat with President Ortiz and with students from several engineering clubs on campus.

At Hollenbeck Middle School, Duno will talk to students in the Great Minds in STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering,Math) project, a partnership of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Cal State LA and the CSU Chancellor’s Office. The goal of the project is to stimulate interest in the STEM fields starting in the fourth grade.

A both schools, Duno will speak – then engage in a question and answer period and spend time with the students taking pictures and signing autographs.

Later that day Duno will be signing copies of her award-winning bilingual book “Go, Milka, Go!” at Libreria Martinez in Santa Ana from 6pm – 9pm. The book, about Milka’s life and racing career, was awarded the Best Young Adult Sports/Recreation Book of 2009 at the 11th Annual International Latino Book Awards. The prestigious awards honor literary excellence within the Latino community in a variety of categories.

Michael Ortiz, Cal Poly, Hollenbeck Middle School, STEM and Libreria Martinez for these wonderful opportunities,” said Duno. “I feel very strongly about academics and how a strong academic background will serve you in all areas of your life.
