Vision Racing Indy 500 Day 7 FAST FRIDAY Notes & Quotes
Press Release
Advertisment

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The rain stayed away and “Fast Friday” was fairly active as IZOD IndyCar teams worked on trimming out their cars a little more and gaining more speed in practice as they get set for Saturday’s much anticipated new Indianapolis 500 qualifying format for Pole Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Vision Racing driver Ed Carpenter put down his fastest lap of the day early on in practice aboard the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka as he and his Panther Racing crew prepare for the 2010 Indianapolis 500. As the track cooled and weather conditions changed from what is expected for qualifying, the team elected not run again. By the end of the day, Carpenter’s fast lap of 224.378 mph, earned on his 6th lap slotted him as the 25th fastest driver on the speed charts.

Carpenter completed a total of 17 laps in his Vision Racing’s No. 20 Honda powered Dallara, sponsored by Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka.  He will be making his 100th IZOD IndyCar Series start and is preparing for his seventh Indianapolis 500-mile race and sixth with Vision Racing. Last season Carpenter started 17th and drove to eighth place finish. His best drive at Indianapolis came in 2008 when he started 10th, drove his first career IndyCar Series leader laps (3) and finished fifth.

The No.4 National Guard Panther Racing team elected not to turn any laps during “Fast Friday” practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, instead electing to wait until tomorrow’s Pole Day qualifications after a full day of productive running on Thursday that produced a top-five with a quick lap of 226.106 mph. The 2005 Indianapolis 500 champion will make his eighth IZOD IndyCar Series start at the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”.

On Saturday, Carpenter and car sponsor and golf legend Fuzzy Zoeller will be available for media interviews following Carpenter’s first qualifying attempt.

IZOD IndyCar Series action will resume Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. ET for practice and will conclude at 10 a.m. with Pole Day qualifying beginning at 11:00 a.m.

On practice:

“We ran early and got everything we wanted to do taken care of. The way the weather is looking for the weekend we feel there will be an opportunity to do some race runs on Sunday so we just did a couple of qualifying sims today to make sure the car still felt good. We didn’t want to get too carried away because the weather is going to be a little different on Pole Day. I think we’re in good shape and I think it’ll be pretty intense trying to make that Top 9.  There will be quite a few cars going for those last few spots that might be open. I think we can realistically be anywhere from eighth to fifteenth. At the very least it will be interesting.”

Dan Wheldon – No. 4 National Guard/Panther Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone

Top Speed in Practice: Did not practice

Top Time in Practice: Did not practice

Number of Laps in Practice: 0

Overall Rank in Practice: Did not practice

Best Lap This Month: 226.106 (May 20, 2010)

On practice:

“Obviously the car was quick in qualifying trim on Thursday. It’s important to note that the guys worked hard to prepare the car for qualifying trim most of the day and we made the conscious decision not to go out in the last hour and a half because we are comfortable with where we are with the car and excited for qualifying. I feel like we’re in really good shape and I think it’s going to be very competitive out there but we’re confident that we can do a good job representing the National Guard.”
