WELCOME, N.C. (April 16, 2010) — Richard Childress Racing’s No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet Impala will carry a decal for this week’s NASCAR activities at Texas Motor Speedway honoring the 29 coal miners who lost their lives in the April 5 mine explosion in West Virginia.

The Upper Big Branch mine explosion in Montcoal, W. Va., was the worst U.S. mining disaster since 1984.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic event,” said Richard Childress, president and chief executive officer of Richard Childress Racing. “Coal miners and their families are part of the backbone of American society so all of us at RCR wanted to show our respect for them for their loss.”

The decal is affixed on the lower front quarter-panel, in front of the rear tires, of the No. 29 Chevy.

“We have a tremendous fan following in West Virginia, and we were very saddened to hear the news,” said Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet.  “For all of those who lost their lives and for their families and friends, we will race in their honor this weekend in Texas.”
