Wreck at Talladega Ruins Johnny Sauter’s Day
Press Release
Sauter started Sunday’s race 39th with qualifying rained out on Saturday and the starting grid set by Owner’s Points. After pit stops during the mandatory competition caution on lap 20, Sauter kept the car in the lead pack for the remainder of his time on the track. The car made its way into the top-10 on several occasions and Sauter was running in 13th position when Busch made the contact that sent him spinning on lap 83. Sauter was unhurt in the crash.
“Well, we obviously had a lot of speed out there yesterday, and that was a great feeling,” said Sauter. “The car was strong, but unfortunately we did not get the finish we hoped for. It’s definitely a good feeling knowing you have a fast race car and we felt confident that if we were there at the end we could have done some good things. Unfortunately, someone just got a little impatient out there and our day ended early.”
Team owner Tommy Baldwin headed to Talladega Superspeedway with plenty of confidence in both the No. 36 and No. 35 Chevrolets. However, the bad luck that has plagued the team for most of the season seemed to follow to Alabama.
“The weekend did not get off to the greatest of starts due to the weather on Saturday,” said Baldwin. “We did not get the chance to qualify with Aric Almirola in the No. 35, and we knew the car was fast enough to make the race. Then yesterday we had a really good car until Kyle Busch took us out. That pretty much ruined our weekend.”
The TBR team will look to rebound next weekend when the Sprint Cup series heads to Richmond International Raceway. The Crown Royal Presents The Heath Calhoun 400 will be televised live on FOX next Saturday night, May 1st, at 7pm EST.
