Race Notes and Quotes
This Weekend’s Hartford Chevrolet Impala at Pocono Raceway … Clint Bowyer will pilot Chassis No. 298 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable. This Chevrolet, built new in 2010, made its debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March, where Bowyer finished 23rd following a late-race contact that cut down his left-rear tire. In May, Bowyer was in line for another solid finish at Dover International Speedway but, on the final pit stop of the day, he left his stall with the jack wedged underneath the No. 33 machine, resulting in a pit road penalty, the loss of a lap and a less-than-desired 17th-place finish. Most recently, the Emporia, Kan., native started on the outside row and led 59 laps en route to a ninth-place finish in this No. 33 Impala the last time NASCAR’s senior tour visited Pocono in June.
Pocono Stats … In nine NSCS starts at the “Tricky Triangle,” Bowyer has earned one top-five and five top-10 finishes. His best finish at the 2.5-mile tri-oval came last August where he led 23 laps en route to a third-place finish. The two-time NSCS race winner has completed 1,659 of 1,710 laps contested (97 percent) and owns a 16.6 average finish at the Long Pond, Pa., facility.

The Hartford Colors … Bowyer’s Chevrolet Impala will sport a different paint scheme for the second consecutive weekend as the white, blue and maroon colors of The Hartford adorn the No. 33 for the second of three races in which the Hartford, Conn.,-based corporation will be featured as the primary sponsor. The Hartford’s final race as primary sponsor the October 10th race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Stacking Up … Here is how Bowyer ranks against his competition through the first 20 races of the 2010 season…

  • Fifth … Fastest Speed in Traffic
  • Fifth … Fastest Early in the Run (first 25 percent of the race laps since a pit stop)
  • Fifth … Green Flag Speed
  • Sixth … Laps Run Inside the Top 15 (3,824 of 5,801 or 65.9 percent)
  • Ninth … Driver Rating (90.5) The Driver Rating formula combining the following categories: wins, finishes, top-15 finishes, average running position while on lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, led most laps and lead-lap finish.

  • 13th … Fastest Laps Run (137)

Rearview Mirror … Bowyer and the No. 33 Wheaties FUEL Chevrolet team started sixth and finished fourth in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With six races remaining before the 12-man Chase for the Sprint Cup Series field is set, the 31-year-old RCR driver remains 12th in the NSCS point standings, 62 markers ahead of Mark Martin in 13th and 16 points behind Greg Biffle in 11th.

CLINT BOWYER QUOTES:

You finished ninth at Pocono in June. How do you feel about heading back there for the second time around?

“Pocono is a race track where I feel we can have a top-five run. The last time there, we led a lot of laps early and circumstances took us out of it at the end. At one point, we were 29th, but we were fortunate enough to get back up to where we needed to be. This is a race track where I think we can get a good run going and help keep us locked in the top 12.”

There is such a quick turnaround between these two races, but it seems like you guys hit on the set up in June. Would that be a fair assumption?

“Yes, I think that is exactly it. When you look at your strong points, you see how motors, with our power, were strong there. We made some mistakes in the race and got ourselves dialed out, so, we need to make sure we lean on our notes and not do that again.”

How did you feel when you were sitting out front at Pocono in June compared to where you ended up?

“It was awesome. I didn’t want it to end. I wanted it to stay green all day long. I passed the eventual race winner twice and drove away from him each time. Then, when it came time to get it done at the end, they dusted us. They made better adjustments and did a better job with their opportunities. It is as simple as that.”
