GOOD SPORTS. GOOD STEAKS, TOO
Kansas State and Missouri are undefeated in college football. The Chiefs are one of three remaining undefeated teams in the NFL. KU and K-State can’t escape the hype entering the college basketball season. And now … NASCAR comes to town. For once, Kansas City isn’t on suicide watch when it comes to sports.
82 . SCOTT SPEED
CONCRETE HURDLE: Speed has found good fortune at Dover in a truck, winning there in May 2008. A year later, he earned a top 10 in the Nationwide Series. But “I’ve always seemed to struggle here in the Cup car,” he said. He qualified 20th under sunny skies but finished 32nd on a mostly cloudy Sunday afternoon, searching for speed up and down Dover’s high banks. He never found it.
KANSAS, TAKE TWO: Though he made ARCA and truck starts on the same day at Kansas in April 2008, Speed hadn’t driven a Cup car on the 1.5-mile oval until the No. 82 unloaded there last fall. He qualified 10th, ran a clean race and completed all but one lap before finishing 27th.
VITAL SIGNS: Ranks 29th in the driver standings — 19 points behind 28th- place Elliott Sadler.
83 . REED SORENSON
UNDER THE RADAR: Sorenson kept the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota on the lead lad and finished there, ending up 16th Sunday at Dover. Quietly, Sorenson has had a consistent end to the summer. He’s finished 16th or better in three of his past four starts, races that have come at three distinctly different tracks — 15th at Bristol, 14th at Atlanta and 16th at Dover. After 10 races so far in the No. 83, his average finish is 19.2 with four top 10s.
LANE CHOICE: Sorenson has four starts at Kansas, with a best finish of seventh in September 2007. “Kansas is a fun track to race on,” he said. “It’s fast, you can pass on different lines and they have great fans. The No. 83 team has historically performed well at intermediate tracks so I’m hoping we can continue building momentum and speed, and come out of the weekend with another strong finish.”
VITAL SIGNS: The No. 83 ranks 27th in the car owner standings — 56 points behind the No. 12.
