Port St. Lucie’s Ryan Rust waits for NASCAR’s review
Caught in the Catchfence™Ryan Rust is awaiting the results of a test — sort of.
Rust made his Camping World Truck Series debut in last Friday’s race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. The 2010 Treasure Coast High School and Indian River State College graduate started 35th and brought his Dodge truck to the checkers — unscathed — in 28th.
But the most important result?
Waiting for a call from former Cup driver Brett Bodine, NASCAR’s director of cost research who also monitors the development of young drivers throughout the series.
“(He’s) going to call me in the next few days and let me know what he thought. It’s kind of like a test, not on how I performed position-wise but how I conducted myself,” said the Port St. Lucie native, who also is being tested in a summer calculus course at IRSC.
Rust, 18, said he didn’t spend much time with any of the drivers, but one of his crew members took the time to introduce him to the series’ current points leader.
