Steve Turner, owner of four Nationwide, three truck teams, says he won’t just be an owner with a checkbook
Caught in the Catchfence™Steve Turner doesn’t consider himself a micromanager but he’s certainly not a hands-off owner.
The new owner of Braun Racing whose Turner Motorsports organization now boasts four Nationwide cars and three Camping World Truck Series entries can recall only one time in the last five years of owning a race team when he made an executive decision during a race.
“I had one crew chief in the last five years that I tapped on the shoulder on the box and told him to get off the box, ‘You’re done,’ in the middle of the race because he wasn’t listening to the driver,” Turner says. “The driver was telling him what the truck was doing, and I was standing there watching it and knew exactly what it was doing, too, and he just wanted to be an ass about it.
“We brought the truck down pit road, adjusted it, went back out and the truck drove back to the front.”
