The team completed only one practice session earlier in the day and solidly owned the 3rd spot with a time of 19.086. Knowing that the car was good and realizing that not much was to be gained by going out a second time, the team opted to not participate in the 2nd session of the day. As qualifying approached the weather once again was considerably colder than it was during practice, but that didn’t affect Miinch’s qualification. The resident of Alpine, California took his #03 Position One Motorsports entry and procured the 2nd spot on the charts with a time of 18.801. Taylor would only slide one spot down the timesheet to 3rd by the conclusion of the session. His 3rd place qualifying effort is his best thus far. The team congratulated Miinch on his excellent accomplishment when he got out of the car.
Miinch started the race in spectacular fashion and by lap #4 he was battling for the lead and eventually took it on the next lap. It was then when Taylor ran the race’s fastest lap of 19.314. He held onto the lead for most of the beginning of the race and it wasn’t until lap #15 that the #56 of Dylan Lupton took the spot from Miinch, whose car began getting loose. A determined Miinch continued racing hard and when the #55 of Brandon Davis caught up to him on lap #33, the youngster was not going to hand over his 2nd spot without a fight. For the next 10 laps Miinch and Davis went side by side at every corner with Miinch trying the high and lowlines of the track, fearlessly trying to keep his position, but the loose condition worsened and Miinch would eventually relinquish the position to Davis in the closing laps. With no threat for his current position present, Miinch went on to finish the race in 3rd. This is Miinch’s best finish yet in the 7 races he has run so far at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
Saturday night was also a special night for the Position One Motorsports team as it was the first night in which the team had the honor of hosting its first “Giving Thanks to a Hero” giveaway selectees. Bob Crawford and his family were selected to attend the race and be a guest of Position One Motorsports at their suite. Bob has served our country in the US Army, and later in the National Guard. He has been to Iraq during Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom, as well as serving at Guantanamo Bay. Bob continued serving his country by protecting our nation’s places of interest after September 11, 2001 as part of the National Guard. Bob’s sister in law, Mindee Crawford submitted his name to Position One Motorsports.
Taylor Miinch, Driver No. 03 – “I’m so happy. We definitely learned from last week and felt we used that to our advantage this week and the result is proof. I’m grateful to the team for their hard work and for getting me in this position. I’m excited to see what happens at our next race. Thank you to our sponsors and my family for sticking with me. Also, my thoughts go to our service men and women who make this Memorial Day special to all of us.”
John Schuetze, Crew Chief No. 03 – “Everyone did an excellent job tonight I’m real proud of the crew and Taylor for his performance. He led his first laps and ran the race’s fastest lap on lap #5, and overall did everything right. He really is improving with every race and I’m looking forward to the next race and I am eager to see how much further we can advance.”
