On the other end of the line was a representative of her racing sponsor, who explained there were no funds to support her racing efforts in 2011.
“Just the worst time,” Owens said in a telephone interview from her new base in Mooresville, N.C. “That’s way past the deadline for a driver to make plans for the next season.”
As a rule, it takes six months to one year to lasso a company for sponsorship funds, money generally budgeted for advertising and marketing.
The 22-year-old Spruce Creek High School graduate knew when the call ended there was little or no chance of starting any race during Speed Weeks at Daytona International Speedway.
Owens has three top-10 finishes in the ARCA Series and started on the outside pole of the 2009 Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona. When Owens didn’t show up at ARCA testing last week, it got friends and associates talking about how they could help get her back in the game.
