Bobby Dale Earnhardt not relying on famous name

He has one of the most famous names in motorsports, but Bobby Dale Earnhardt is determined to go racing on his own.

“I want to work my way up the way my grandfather did and pretty much earn what I get,” said Bobby Dale, the first grandson of the late Dale Earnhardt.

“I think I’ll respect it and appreciate it more.”

The 23-year-old driver broke into racing behind the wheel of a specially designed lawnmower that can reach speeds of 80 mph.

For the past year — as his driving career has progressed to late models — Bobby Dale has been working full time as a cook at a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Rockingham, N.C.

It’s an interesting path, considering his father, Kerry, started 106 races in NASCAR’s top-three touring series and his uncle, Dale Jr., is the sport’s most-popular driver and owner of a championship-contending Nationwide Series team, JR Motorsports.
