Saturday
Canadian J.R. Fitzpatrick Sidelined in NASCAR Nationwide Series Opener
Press Release
The 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Runner-up was forced to park up the Schick Hydro / Energizer No.27 Baker Curb Racing Ford Mustang after just a handful of laps around the 2.5-mile speedway with a mechanical issue, possibly gear-related, ending his start prematurely, and disappointingly, in the 300-mile event.
“Well I’m obviously gutted to have retired so early,” stated the 22-year-old from Cambridge, Ontario. “I’m disappointed for the Baker Curb Racing crew who’ve worked hard this whole week. We knew we had a great car in the draft having posted top-15 times in practice. Unfortunately the issue that led to my retirement may well have been an unknown factor in our qualifying pace on Friday also.
“Overall it’s too bad but these things happen in racing. I’m sure we’ll all re-group from this but needless to say that after the build up all week here in Daytona, I was looking to finally get some decent race laps under my belt. I’ll put it behind me though and I look forward to getting back behind the wheel shortly.”
Fitzpatrick had qualified 42nd for Saturday’s ‘DRIVE4COPD 300’ but quickly worked his way up to 34th by the second lap of the race where he remained until his issues sidelined him. The remainder of the event witnessed plenty more of the two-car drafting evidenced throughout the week at Daytona in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series.
Two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart, driving the No.4 entry, beat out pole-sitter Clint Bowyer, in the No.33 car, by a mere .007s of a second when the checkered fell on Saturday’s race after 120-laps.
An announcement on J.R. Fitzpatrick’s full-time 2011 race schedule is expected shortly with the stand-out Canadian continuing to build his reputation in the NASCAR ranks.
The NASCAR Nationwide Series moves onto the Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona next Saturday, 26th February, for Round 2 of the 34-race 2011 schedule.
