Brian Scott Post-Race Recap

Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway

October 14, 2011

Race Highlights:

- Brian Scott featured a different look on the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing entry for Friday night’s Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway as Doosan was the primary sponsor for the race. Scott picked up the eighth starting spot for the race during Friday afternoon’s qualifying session.

- The No. 11 Doosan Toyota started off tight for Scott during the opening laps of the 300-mile event. Scott fell back to the 12th position by the time the first caution waved at lap 25. In addition to the tight issue in the turns, Scott reported a problem with the right rear of the car and he described it as a soft feeling, wondering if perhaps the issue was related to the inner liner of the tires. Crew chief Kevin Kidd called for a chassis adjustment, air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel and quick pit work put Scott in the 10th position for the restart.

- The chassis adjustments helped some with the handling in the turns but the right-rear issue persisted during the next several circuits around the track. The team made another round of adjustments during the third caution at lap 68. The adjustments helped and Scott made his way back into the top 10 during the next four laps, running in the eighth position by lap 77.

- Scott reported that the Doosan Toyota had shifted slightly to the free side by the halfway point of the race, explaining that he needed more right-rear grip. The fourth caution of the race waved at lap 127 with Scott running in the 10th position. The team made a track bar adjustment, changed four tires and added fuel. Another fast pit stop by the No. 11 team put Scott in the sixth position for the restart at lap 135.

- The grip issue persisted on the No. 11 Doosan Toyota so the team made another chassis adjustment during the caution at lap 171 and in what would be their last pit stop of the night. Scott restarted the race from the seventh position. The race went on to be slowed by caution two more times and Scott made the most of the final 29 laps of the race, moving into sixth place at lap 190 and into fifth place before the checkered flag waved for Carl Edwards.

- Scott’s Joe Gibbs Racing Teammates Kyle Busch and Joey Logano finished second and 19th, respectively.

- Scott’s fifth-place finish at Charlotte moves him up one position in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver point standings to eighth place. He now sits 17 points behind Kenny Wallace in seventh place. Elliott Sadler closed the gap between himself and point leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Sadler is 15 points behind in second place.

Scott Quotes:

“We started off really not where we wanted to, but we were able to hang out right near the top 10. The pit crew did a great job always moving us forward on spots. Kevin (Kidd, crew chief) did good adjustments and that just kept us in the hunt until we could get our car right. Towards the end of the race we had our car pretty good and we were able to gain some more positions and have some more good pit stops. We just kept working towards the front from about the middle of the race on and we made it count at the end when it mattered. That was great and we were able to bring home a top five for Doosan and it was great to have them on the car. They are such a terrific partner at Joe Gibbs Racing and our Camry was just fast when it counted. That’s all that matters.”
