Bubba Pollard Wins One On the Outside for Beau South Alabama
Press Release“Pollard Adopts Hybrid Paint Scheme Dedicated to Loss of Friend and Fellow Racer Slocumb”
CONCORD, NC (April 18, 2011) – Just one week after the loss of a dear friend and competitor, Beau Slocumb, Bubba Pollard took his Ronnie Sanders-owned, formerly #18 car to victory lane at South Alabama Speedway, only this time it had a splash of camouflage and an “08” on the side.
Pollard, and the crowd in Opp, Alabama, are accustomed to seeing him take his red #18 to victory lane but this time it was sweetened by the adaptation of his familiar colors into a hybrid of Slocumb’s iconic camouflage paint scheme and his #08 just a short week after Slocumb lost a two-year battle with cancer.
“We did it for the Snowball Derby last year,” explained Pollard of the paint scheme. “And I thought it was the right time now with everything happening with his loss last weekend; I figured he would enjoy it. We can’t have him at the racetrack physically anymore, but we can have him at the racetrack in other ways. So we’re going to take him along and he’ll be with us for a while.”
Pending an approval look from Slocumb’s family, Pollard is considering running the paint scheme to honor the fallen racer for the remainder of the season.
“We might just leave it on the car all year,” said Pollard. “We haven’t decided yet, but we’ll talk to his family and see what they say and hopefully they approve it so we can run it all year. It’s pretty cool.”
It was certainly special for Slocumb’s family and his memory to ride along to the victory with Pollard, but it was also an emotional win for Pollard as he made his pass for the lead “Beau style.”
“Me and Beau we were good friends,” said Pollard. “So it’s special for me to come back and do this for him. I thought we had a pretty good shot at North Wilkesboro last weekend and we couldn’t quite pull it off. But it’s special for me, and my family even more, to not only win, but to pass on the outside to do it. That was Beau’s thing; he always tended to do at Cordele (Watermelon Capital Speedway, GA) and that’s what he was famous for there. So it was really cool to do that and also win the race just the week after.”
Pollard and his #08 Pro Late Model will head to Five Flags Speedway next for the Pro Late Model 100 event this Friday night, April 22nd, and then on to Gresham Motorsports Park for the US Auto Sales 100 on Saturday, April 23rd.
