Austin, TX 9/27/11- If you take a look at the result sheets from this past weekend’s final Gulf Coast series doubleheader at Five Flags Speedway and Mobile Int’l Speedway, you will see that Texas native Casey Smith came away from the weekend with a pair of 10th place finishes. However; those results don’t even come close to showing how Smith raced throughout the weekend, nor how much the team improved their racecar since their last outing.

Race one of the weekend at Pensacola, Florida’s Five Flags Speedway saw Smith qualify his #99 Smith Paving/Sealmaster of Austin Chevy Impala in the sixtieth position out of the twenty-five cars in attendance. It would only take a third of the 100 lap event, that went the entire distance clean and green, for Smith to move into the top ten, but from that point on the handling would fade over the next sixty green flag laps limiting Casey’s advances through the field and resulting in a tenth place finish after starting out with a fast racecar.

After several morning changes to the car and an hour ride west the Smith Racing team unloaded at Mobile Int’l Speedway for race two of the weekend doubleheader. The results of what they learned the night before about what they need to do to make their car faster quickly appeared on the speed chart as Casey qualified third for the 100 lap event. When the race started it took little time for Smith to flex his muscle as he grabbed the lead just nine laps in. The #99 machine never raced outside the top three positions until a lap 80 restart saw second place man Augie Grill lose a tire heading into turn one sending several drivers scrambling, one of which was Smith, all making contact with on another. Never able to recover from the contact Smith once again settled for a 10th place finish.

“I know when people look at the results they’ll think we didn’t have too good of a weekend and are still struggling. That’s not the case though; the results this weekend doesn’t show how much better we made our car since we last ran,” stated Smith. “I feel we had a pretty good weekend, we just needed a caution or two to make a few small adjustments and we would have been in the mix up front at Pensacola. At Mobile we had an even better car and just got too and towards the end I got ran over a bit on a restart which went us backwards.”
