Carpenter Tops Speed Charts on Opening Day at IMS
Press ReleaseEd Carpenter Wheels 32 Laps in Preparation for the 100th Anniversary of the Indianapolis 500

The 30-year old Indianapolis, Indiana native has impressive stats on the 2.5-mile oval, finishing in the top 11 positions four times in the past six years.
Ed Carpenter: “It was a good first day. It’s only day one, but it’s really exciting to see hard work pay off. We’ve all worked hard all off season and it’s good to see progress. We’re going to have to keep up the effort because it’s a long week heading into qualifying, but I definitely like the start that we’re off to. It’s great to see the Dollar General machine up front.”
Sarah Fisher: “I was really proud of the boys for starting off the month with little to no error today. It was a bonus for Ed to top the charts, but we know we still have a lot more work to accomplish. For this being our first race of the season, we know we have to hit the ground running, and to see the team gelling already is a great testament to our people.”
If the weather cooperates, Carpenter and the SFR team will resume practice tomorrow from noon-6pm.
The 95th running of the Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday, May 29, 2011, which will be the 5th race of the 17-race 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season. SFR driver Ed Carpenter will attempt to make his way into the field of 33 starting positions on Saturday, May 22, 2011. The race will be aired live on ABC at Noon EST on Sunday, May 29, 2011. Additional coverage will be available on IMS Radio, XM Satellite Radio Channel 145 “IndyCar Racing,” along with broadcast coverage summaries available at www.indycar.com and www.sarahfisher.com.
About Ed Carpenter:
The 2011 IZOD IndyCar ® Series season marks Ed Carpenter’s eighth year in the series after making his debut at Chicagoland Speedway in 2003. Growing up with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in his backyard, with Laura and step-father Tony George as parents, Carpenter was no stranger to racing. Carpenter began racing at eight years old and balanced racing with education throughout much of his career. Earning a Bachelors of Science degree in marketing from Butler University in 2003, Carpenter graduated from Butler just weeks before he won the Freedom 100 Indy Pro Series race at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With a college degree under his belt, Carpenter is now able to focus on several other activities when he’s not racing. Away from the track, Carpenter follows professional football and is an Indianapolis Colts season ticket holder and an enthusiastic Butler Bulldogs supporter. The 29-year old is also an avid cyclist, water skier and enjoys working out. Before he became a regular in the IZOD IndyCar Series, Carpenter was a short track racer in the United States Auto Club (USAC) midget, sprint and Silver Crown Series. 2011 marks his first season with Sarah Fisher Racing (SFR) and Dollar General. Carpenter resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Heather, his daughter Makenna, son Ryder, and their two dogs Bentley (Rottweiler) and Roscoe (Chihuahua).
