Project American Heroes, a collaborative effort between several groups to restore a classic Chevrolet and bring the finished product to auction at a Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction televised on SPEED, with all proceeds going to the Armed Forces Foundation, is being honored with the foundation’s Patriot of the Year Award. The annual award, to be presented next week at the organization’s Congressional Gala in Washington D.C., honors groups or individuals exhibiting an exceptional dedication to our military community.

“SPEED is tremendously proud to be included in the recognition of Project American Heroes,” said SPEED President Hunter Nickell, who will attend the event on April 6 at the Ronald Reagan Building. “The men and women who put this project together do so with the utmost honor and respect for those who have served and continue to serve our great country.”

The 2010 project started with Route 66 Motorsports, the team behind the restoration of a classic 1970 Chevelle, and included Super Chevy Magazine, which helped coordinate donated materials and parts, Barrett-Jackson, which donated auction space at its Orange County event, and SPEED, which provided television coverage and consideration.

“Project American Heroes is a team effort, and each year we’re incredibly humbled to see these groups come together in support of our troops,” said Patricia Driscoll, President and Executive Director of the Armed Forces Foundation. “SPEED’s role helps us get coverage not just of the Project American Heroes car but also goes a long way in publicizing our programs and what we’re doing for the military community.”

This year, the restored Chevelle went for $250,000 at auction, with all proceeds going to the Armed Forces Foundation. In 2009, a Chevrolet brought in an eye-popping $500,000.

In 2010, SPEED sister network FOX Sports was presented with the Patriot Award at the Armed Forces Foundation’s Sixth Annual Congressional Gala.  The cast and crew of FOX NFL SUNDAY received this prestigious honor in large part due to broadcasting the network’s NFL pregame show from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan live in front of U.S. soldiers in November of 2009.  At the award gala, FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Michael Strahan who grew up a military brat said, “This award means more to me than any of my accomplishments on the football field.”

The Armed Forces Foundation is dedicated to providing comfort and solace to members of the military community through financial support, career counseling, housing assistance and recreational therapy programs. Services are offered to active-duty and retired personnel, National Guard, Reserve components and their loved ones. SPEED provides programming to military outlets through the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS).
