This was Martin’s 2nd series pole of the 2011 season, his 51st series career pole and his 3rd series pole at Talladega Superspeedway. Also, at the age of 52, Martin became the oldest series pole winner at Talladega Superspeedway, which was previously held by Ricky Rudd at the age of 47 (on April 25, 2004). If Martin is able to win, he will knock Harry Gant from the record books (who was 51 at his 1991 victory) on being the oldest winner at Talladega.
Following Martin and Johnson to the drop of the green flag on Sunday will be Clint Bowyer (181.243) starting from third, Trevor Bayne (181.011) fourth and Jeff Gordon (180.918) starting from fifth.
Rounding out the top-ten starting positions will be Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (180.905) starting sixth, Paul Menard (180.655) seventh, David Ragan (180.608) eighth, Carl Edwards (180.210) ninth and Ryan Newman(180.203) will start from the tenth starting position.
Failing to make the starting lineup were the #35 driven by Geoffrey Bodine, the #46 driven by Scott Speed, the #77 driven by TJ Bell and the #37 driven by Josh Wise.
The Best Qualifying Attempt Among the “Chase” Drivers: Jimmie Johnson - 181.360 mph, 2nd.
The Worse Qualifying Attempt Among the “Chase” Drivers: Kyle Busch - 178.780 mph, 34th.
The Good Sam Club 500 is scheduled to get underway approximately at 2:20 PM (ET) Sunday afternoon, and ESPN will begin their (pre-race) television coverage at 1:00 PM (ET).
