At 29 years of age, David Mayhew is well aware that opportunities to advance in the racing world can be few and far between.

The transplanted Bakersfield driver has made the most of a series of opportunities over the past couple of years which have led to the biggest opportunity of his racing career — driving Kevin Harvick’s Nationwide Series car in the U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway on Saturday.

“To get the opportunity to drive something that good is pretty amazing and I’ll try to make the best of it,” said Mayhew, who has been a regular on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West for the past few years.

It’s been a long road to get to this point for Mayhew, who started the journey back in 2004 when he made the weekly trek from Atascadero to race at Mesa Marin Raceway and came away with the Late Model track championship.
