Iowa Speedway up Next for Thompson Motorsports
Press Release“The Marquee Oval Brings Together to Top Drivers from Both Coasts”

Having started 117 races in his NKNPS career, Thompson has seen a lot of race tracks, and there is no race track he loves more than Iowa Speedway. 2012 marks the sixth year that Iowa Speedway has staged a combination race bringing the best of the both the East and the West together for a mid-season shootout for bragging rights in the Graham Tire “150″. A race that Thompson is squarely focused on finding success in.
“I just love the place,” Thompson said. “It runs a lot like a superspeedway and has multiple grooves. You can run just about anywhere on the track and that produces some of the best side-by-side racing for fans and drivers.”
While at most short tracks, sticking to the bottom groove is a primary objective, Iowa Speedway lends itself to driver preference. “You need to run where you are most comfortable and where your car works best,” Thompson offered. “You will find me in the top groove pretty early in the race.”
In most NASCAR K&N Pro Series races, qualifying typically dictates finishing position per say. And while qualifying up front is always a benefit, the 7/8-mile banked oval offers a variety of strategies both on the track and during pit stops that can allow you to improve track position.
“The great thing about Iowa is that you can get to the front if you have a good car under you,” Thompson offered. “We have a great car and we are looking for a great finish.”
Thompson has started 117 NKNPS races in his career with one win, one Coors Light pole award, 23 top five and 63 top ten performances. Last year in this event, Thompson finished seventh overall and third among his fellow competitors from the west.
The race this weekend starts a challenging three week stretch for the team. Immediately after the race on Saturday Iowa, the team will head for an inaugural event in Brainerd, MN May 26 then travel back to the west for an event June 2 at The Bullring at LVMS in Las Vegas, NV where Havens will jump back in the driver’s seat.
The Thompson Motorsports is also fielding a car in the NASCAR All American Series at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho for 15-year old Hannah Newhouse. Newhouse is back in action this weekend hoping to build on early season success where she is second in the overall point standings on the strength of one win and two third place performances in the first three races.
