Local area sees economic impact of Track Too Tough To Tame

DARLINGTON, S.C. (Jan. 14, 2013) – Darlington Raceway and Americrown Service Corp., the track’s food, beverage and merchandise provider, are pleased to announce that local charities and service groups received nearly $100,000 in donations from the two organizations in 2012.

Darlington Raceway made charitable contributions totaling over $40,000 to various charities and programs in the local community, which included the YMCA of Darlington, the South Carolina State Highway Patrol Make-A-Wish Golf Tournament, the Pilot Club of Darlington and local non-profit rescue squads, among many others.

“We are pleased that we were able to help so many local organizations and charity groups in 2012,” Darlington Raceway President Chris Browning said. “We try to do our part to be good community partners and support many initiatives that occur in our local area. The economic impact the track has locally is tremendous and we are pleased that so many people and organizations benefit from us being here in Darlington.”

Local charitable organizations also benefited from Darlington’s partnership with companies such as M&M Parking and ShowPros.

M&M Parking and ShowPros hire local service groups to assist with their parking and usher operations during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 race weekend, which results in an additional $30,000 in donated funds to those organizations.

Americrown, the food, beverage and merchandise provider for Darlington and a subsidiary of the track’s parent company International Speedway Corporation (ISC), hires numerous service groups and charitable organizations to work during the race weekend in a variety of capacities including concessions, merchandise and catering. In total, Americrown paid its groups well over $28,000 for the two-day event weekend.

“We hire a great deal of people locally to help us cater to the over 75,000 fans that visit Darlington for the Bojangles’ Southern 500 race weekend each May. We’ve enjoyed the support that the local groups bring to assist us on race weekend and in turn their organization has benefited from it,” Americrown President Jim Morris said.

Darlington Raceway boasts an economic impact of over $54 million for the state of South Carolina and is the state’s largest attended professional sporting event annually. The track, also referred to as the Lady in Black, has been hosting NASCAR racing since 1950, and is the sport’s first paved superspeedway.

With its lengthy history hosting the nation’s top racing series, the track is poised for another successful year in racing in 2013.

“The 2013 season is just around the corner and the economic impact our events have on the local economy is tremendous for this area,” Browning said. “We’re looking forward to another successful season this year in which many people and groups will benefit from great NASCAR racing in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.”
