Dale Earnhardt, Jr., broke a 55-race winless streak Sunday night in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Daytona 500, where rain brought out the red flag after 39 laps, and then resulted in a 6 hour, 22 minute delay at Daytona International Speedway.

Earnhardt, who led the most laps – 54 out of 200, received his twentieth series career win, his second series career Daytona 500 win and his third series win at Daytona International Speedway.

Following Earnhardt to the drop of the checkered/yellow flags were Denny Hamlin finishing second, Brad Keselowski third, Jeff Gordon fourth and the defending series champion, Jimmie Johnson, finished fifth.

Rounding out the top-ten finishing positions were Matt Kenseth claiming sixth,  Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. seventh, Greg Biffle eighth, pole-sitter and series Sunoco Rookie of the Year (ROTY) contender, Austin Dillon ninth, and Casey Mears finished in tenth place.

After the rain delay and on lap 145 a 13-car pile-up occurred when Brian Scott and Aric Almirola got together, and then 18-laps later Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson got together collecting another eight cars. There would be two more multi-car incidents, with an 8-car pile-up on lap 194 and a 6-car pile-up on the final lap.

With Earnhardt’s victory, bonuses for leading a lap and the most laps, Earnhardt leaves Daytona with a 5-point lead over Denny Hamlin.
